One week, three legends
2010/04/07
WOW! What a week it was. Three legends came to Kuala Lumpur and strutted their stuff as a warm-up to the Petronas Malaysia F1 Grand Prix 2010.
The three legends had all been here before, and like Iglesias said at his press conference, it was great to be invited the first time and even greater to be asked to return. ....
The third legend of the week was R&B star Lionel Richie, founder of ’70s funk group The Commodores and, since 1980, a soloist in his right.
Richie’s night was the eve of the F1 race and his VIP guest list included the King, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin and the Queen, Tuanku Nur Zahirah, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak and wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and wife Puan Sri Norainee Abdul Rahman and former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed and wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.
Richie, who was brought here by Allsports Events, rocked the house with funky numbers like All Night Long and Dancing On The Ceiling and his own love ballads including Hello, Truly, Three Times A Lady and Lady.
At a media conference before his show, Richie gave the press a world scoop when he announced that his next album, to be recorded after his live concerts, would be a country album and that he would be selecting his producer within a fortnight.
“There are several music producers in Nashville who want a piece of this new album,” he said. “This album has been in the making for 25 years. It’s going to be a good one.
“No, I’m not nervous about this change of direction because I’ve always tried to be different and innovative,” he added. “It’s the third album from now that I’d be nervous about.”
